WINDERMERE, Fla. — In a remarkable display of raw talent and fearless racecraft, Leonardo Escorpioni turned in a career-defining performance at the Carb Night Classic Freedom 90, taking the pole position and finishing second in the USF Pro 2000 Presented by Continental Tire event — all in his very first oval racing experience.
Racing out of the Turn 3 Motorsports camp, Escorpioni stamped his credentials from the moment the session opened, securing the pole position ahead of an experienced field. That blistering run was a statement on its own, but what followed in the race was even more telling of the young driver's potential.
Without a single oval mile under his belt heading into the event, Escorpioni found himself shuffled back to second in the early stages as the nuances of oval racing made themselves apparent. Rather than fade into the pack, the 2025 USF Juniors champion immediately went to work, relentlessly pressuring the leader and refusing to cede any ground. As the laps wound down, Escorpioni made his move — going wheel-to-wheel with the eventual race winner in a breathtaking battle for the lead in the closing stages. Ultimately, he was forced to settle for second, but the performance left little doubt that the field will be seeing much more of him in the front.
The result carries significant championship implications. Escorpioni, already a USF Pro 2000 race winner in 2026, climbs to third in the championship point standings and has slashed the gap to the series leader to just 13 points — a margin well within reach as the season continues.
"I can't say enough about how this weekend went," said Escorpioni. "Coming in with zero oval experience, I honestly didn't know exactly what to expect — but the Turn 3 Motorsports team gave me a car capable of winning, and I felt more comfortable with every single lap. Getting pole was huge for my confidence, and in the race, I just kept pushing and trusting my instincts. Getting wheel-to-wheel with the leader at the end — I gave it everything I had. Second hurts a little, but I'm proud of what we accomplished and I'm absolutely motivated heading to Road America. Thirteen points is nothing. We're going for the championship."
Escorpioni now turns his attention to the next round of the USF Pro 2000 Presented by Continental Tire championship at Road America, scheduled for the June 18–21 weekend.
